I had surgery last Friday and have been laid up, and when I was first planning my week home I thought I would write several posts, have a bunch just begging to be posted. I had ideas swirling around my head on what I would write. Blog fodder that was just aching to be written. And when the time came, and the quiet hit....I was nothing but bored. All those posts? Gone, forgotten.
And then this morning.....
My sons playing on the floor with duplo blocks waiting for grandma to come pick them up for school.
And a deeper discussion came out of it, with my almost 5 year old.
Christopher: Look Mommy, I made a gun.
Mommy: That's good buddy, (looking at nothing more than an enormous stack of legos)
Thomas: Guns aren't good and you can't bring that to school, you can't bring guns to school can you mommy! (More and statement than a question)
Mommy: No, Thomas you can't.
Thomas: Cuz I saw on the TV where some kid brought a gun to school and hurt other kids. Guns are bad and they kill people
Mommy: No Thomas, Guns don't kill people. People kill people with guns. So promise me Buddy if you ever see a gun, don't touch it, tell me or daddy or a grown up. Guns needs to be handled with care and respect. Do you know what that means?
Thomas: semi rolling his eyes, yeah don't touch them or it's bad.
Mommy: Yeah something like that. When you are old enough Daddy will teach you about guns and the safety of guns. But until then, let's not touch them ok?
Thomas: Ok mommy
So a couple things occurred to me,
First, our children are growing up in a world of violence. They tell you not to allow your children to watch violent cartoons, or TV with violence. Yet my son saw a story on the news about a boy who brought a .22 gun to school and shot and killed classmates. And he stopped to listen, and took warning.
Another thing I learned, that my son, just shy of 5 years old, is learning about good and bad, right and wrong, and for now? He's choosing the good and the right.

We talk about current events a lot in our house and I honestly wonder if some of the dangers really do sink in. I don't want my kids to live in fear but we've had some pretty bad stuff happen right here in our neighborhood that makes me want to put them in a bubble.
So scary that our kids are learning about this so young. All we can do is try to keep talking to them about right and wrong.
I love that he took what he knew and found the right way to apply it. He is such a smart boy.
It definitely a scary world out there but how awesome that you are raising him knowing that he can come to you ask questions & get the confirmation of the things he already knows are right. Good job mama on handling it so well.
I hope you are feeling better soon.
Way to have a deep conversation while not being 100% well. Becoming a high level mom.
Take care.
It's a beautiful thing when you realize that your children can make good choices. Hope your surgery went well and you are OK?
