You are watching WHAT?

My boys do not watch a whole lot of TV. They never have. They would rather be outside playing, or wrestling on the floor with daddy...or going to the park with mommy and daddy. They are just not TV kids.

And when they do watch TV, like in the mornings, it is strictly the Disney channel. I've seen some of these other cartoons...and OMG WTH??? They have some of the most bizarre stuff on the TV that is supposed to be for kids??? NOT MINE!

So here we think...it's Disney how harsh can it be? I mean it's Disney, it can't be all that bad right? Well I am thinking I am going to start watching everything a heck of a lot more before I let my children watch it.

We decided to let Thomas watch the Toy Stories, and we took him for his 1st movie theater experience to see Toy Story 3....now this is how much my kid watches TV....after 30 minutes he asked to go home! NICE!!!

So now that my child has watched all the Toy Stories, he now tells his brother he is stupid, he now says the words Idiot, and Moron. Because that is what Buzz and Woody say. And because of Toy Story 3....he is now traumatized by anything monkey that clangs cymbals! Well not really....but he does remember that monkey!

So just because it says Disney....doesn't mean it's innocent and just for kids. When he wants to watch Peter Pan and he can't remember the name...he just starts jabbing at the air and says he wants to watch "that" movie!

And don't even get me started on books!!!! I read a Dr. Suess book to him tonight and it talked about KILLING!! WTH???? This is Dr. flippin' Suess! Killing??? Whoa....we're gonna go ahead and put those in the back of the closet!

So although sometimes I am so bummed that my boys won't sit still for even 30 minutes to watch a movie....I am glad that they do not sit for hours and watch these "innocent" Disney movies.

It's best not to let them watch stuff alone - it you're there, you can tell them when it's bad to say things, and that the scary things aren't real in movies and TV.

I STILL find myself making comments like that (not that anyone listens at this point).

I appluad you!! Yeah to you for being a parent that doesn't plop thier kids down in front of the babysitter television and could care less what they are watching!

I had my grandkids over and put the tv on the really old cartoons that I grew up with and was shocked at how much violence we was subjected to. I now hide the remote when the grandkids are here and we go on nature walks.

This was a GREAT post and a good reminder. There are some absolutely CRAZY things out there that kids should not be exposed to.

I have been saying idiot all week. I am totally going to blame it on Toy Story 3 last week!

Huh?! And I've heard such wonderful things about Toy Story 3. But good for you for turning off the TV. We soooo don't do that.

I'm glad Ellie doesn't like watching tv much either. We do watch the children programs together in the morning since I can learn Japanese with her when watching them but other than that, she doesn't really have much interest in tv.

As for Disney movies...yea, as much as I love to watch them, they are definitely not for kids to enjoy. Just think about how they always get rid of villians in their movies. In Little Mermaid, Ursala gets impaled. In Snow White, the stepmother falls off a cliff and crushed with a boulder. Pretty much every single Disney movie shows something horrific that I'd rather not expose Ellie to.

So good for you for not exposing your kids to these kinds of "kid-friendly" movies and books!

I am always surprised when revisiting movies/books from my childhood. There was SO MUCH that flew right over my head that now makes me go "say what?!"

My 7 yr old daughter has only seen maybe 1 "typical" Disney movie because they all seem to carry the same idea - moms are optional, unnecessary and are usually killed off. Excuse me? I agree, too, about the language in a LOT of cartoons, movies, books. It's awful.

Wow, Dr. Seuss and killing? He is one of my favorite children's authors, what book was it? I'll have to remember that.

Thanks for the post Erin, I will have to do some careful screening before letting Benjamin watch anything too!

God bless my dear!

My kid is becoming a TV junkie because his gran lookes after him and that is the only way she can keep quiet. I hate it, these new programmes are horrible. The fighting and the language are not sensored. I think we should move the an armish town now LOL

Disney has a long history of making stories that are NOT for children into movies for children. Thankfully yours aren't TV Junkies - good job!

My best friend talks about screening movies for her kids and I used to really think she was just overreacting.....and then I saw the Princess and the Frog and although I loved it....I wouldn't want to have a discussion about voodoo with my child....AND THEN THEY KILLED THE LIGHTENING BUG! Just murdered him off!!!!

It broke my poor little heart.

I have an extensive Disney movie collection, but that was before I had a child. Now I realize their movies are really meant for adults.

We can't even do most Disney/Pixar movies. My dd9 (has bipolar) can't handle the sad scenes in most of them. Up and The Little Mermaid? Biggest. Tear jerkers. Ever. http://mommylebron.wordpress.com

I've found that even some of the PBS cartoons like Angelina Ballerina and Noddy are terrible.......

They do pick up a lot of the stuff you wish would just go right by their heads, don't they?

When my kids watch tv I always put it on PBS or Nick Jr. I let them watch a different channel one time & seriously it was an AWFUL cartoon where the characters had exaggerated boobs. Not sure what the heck that is doing in a cartoon for kids??? We definitely have to pay close attention to what is on... sad isn't it!

Isn't it strange how children's books and movies are so violent? I think now about Tweetie and Sylvester, Bugs Bunny and my gosh how violent they are! Your sons are gorgeous and I love my son who's now 22 so much and miss those younger days with him, even though I'm glad I'm past the adolescent days ;) Have a great time on your vacation, I'm a So. Cal native and really want to move up north, someday. Looking forward to more of your posts from Mama Kat.

I brought my kids (aged 6 to 14 - four kids, two boys and two girls) and we had this deep discussion afterwards about the whole movie and its meaning. You see television and movies are not babysitters - we have to be there with our kids while they are watching and give them proper guidance too.

Sorry, I meant to see "Toy Story", that's the movie I was talking about in my previous comment.

I did this writing workshop too, but a different prompt.
